In this modern era of technology, the success of any business or organization largely depends on its ability to harness the power of the "Interwebs" and to use it in a self-enhancing way. In this article, you'll learn how to " Wikipedia-nize" your business, organization, or even project--a strategy that will, if done properly, bring you more customers and recognition on a truly global scale.

Things You'll Need:
- Familiarity with Wikipedia and its editing pages
- A serious project (business, organization, etc) that produces good quality work/material and that is relevant and interesting
- Subtlety

Step 1: Find your place. Regardless of what your field of work is, Wikipedia has a place for you. If you are a lobbyist group working on environmental protection, there are going to be multiple pages on Wikipedia which are relevant to your work and financially viable (pages on the EPA, different laws, etc). If you are a New York based Hip Hop Group, you too can find your niche in the Wikiworld, through websites relating to NY based groups or even on music venue pages that you 've played. Everyone and Everything fits into Wikipedia, you just have to take the time to find your place.

Step 2: Once you've found the pages that are relevant to your field of work, you now have to sort through them and see if there are any opportunities for your own work to be cited, mentioned, or discussed. This sounds easy, but in order to get by the Wikipedia moderators and filters, you actually have to be offering something of substance. For example, if you're a new grocery store located on the Upper West Side, rather than try to create your own page (which Wikipedia wouldn't deem as relevant), you could try to see if the Upper West Side page has an opening for you, such as a "Surrounding Stores" or "Local Attractions." Under there, along with other more well known places, you can add your store. Another example is if you're a new blog working on lowering the drinking age. Rather than try to implant yourself into a "Famous blogs" page, look at the National Drinking Age Act and see if there is place for your organization to be listed, among many others, as NGOs working to lower the drinking age.

Step 3: Use Citations! A lot of times, it won't be feasible or realistic for you to put the actual name of your project into a Wikipedia article, due to either tough moderators or the obscurity of your work. However, while you may not get your name in the article, if you have high quality work, you very well can direct traffic to yourself by putting in content and then citing it back to yourself. College students, researchers, and just plain people often times click on the citation next to statements made on Wikipedia to read more about the issue being discussed.

For Example, if you're a music review site trying to get more traffic, it would be extremely useful to put possible tidbits of knowledge you may have regarding an album's production or artist's experiences on that page and then cite it back to your site. Many people (including this author) have clicked on citations after reading something interesting or relatively unknown.

Step 4: Give Back. This last step is crucial for the success of both this demo and your business' health on Wikipedia. If all you do on Wikipedia is edit articles to include your business onto them, moderators will quickly catch on and ban your IP, username, etc. Rather than deal with that hassle, become involved in the community, editing pages that you know about and where you can help, even if it's not related to your business. Your body of edits on Wikipedia will make or break the deal. If you have tons of different edits, it's likely that the self-serving ones won't stand out.

Tips & Warnings
Moderators may, and often will, delete your edits if they feel you are spamming, or abusing the site. Don't fret. Subtlety is the key. Don't flaunt your product around unless it truly is revolutionary and has gained widespread acclaim. Build up your site through minor edits, until maybe you'll have enough recognition to get your own page.
