老美為了英語說得更生動，明白，或帶點隱喻(metaphor)的意味，往往喜歡用些比較的習語(idioms of comparison)，有時所用的字眼，彼此毫無關連，諸如as cool as a cucumber，即是cool和cucumber沒有關連，但還是放在一起比較。不過要注意的是，這些比較習語，有的是指人，有的是指物，有的人、物均可。
(1) as black as coal :
像煤炭一般黑，也就是形容很黑或很髒。(very black or dirty)
The boy's face and hands look as black as coal.
You'd better change your clothes; they are as black as coal.
也可用：as black as soot.(soot是煤煙)
或 as black as Ace of Spades.代替。
(Ace of Spades是紙牌中的黑桃)
(2) as black as ink:
像墨水那樣黑。表示沒有燈光，或黑暗的地方。(dark place without light)
When I entered the room, it was as black as ink.
In the countryside some streets without light can be as black as ink.
反之，as bright as day，表示像白天般的明亮。
When I turn on all the lights, my house is as bright as day.
(3) as blind as a bat :
瞎得像蝙蝠；多半指眼睛視力不好，看不見東西(cannot see or bad eye-sight)有些開玩笑的味道。
Nowaday, I am as blind as a bat without glasses.
Mr. A's eye-sight is getting worse; he is as blind as a bat.
有時後面名詞可用複數，但最好保持習語的原來形式。如：They are both as blind as bats.文法上並無不可。
(4) as bold as brass :
bold是無畏的；冒失的；brass是黃銅。表示唐突放肆，極為無禮。 (impudent or cheeky)
As an outspoken person, Mr. Chen acts as bold as brass.
His action toward others is as bold as brass.
The man must be as bold as brass to have stolen money at mid-day.
(5) as brave as a lion:
As brave as a lion, Mr. A jumped into the river to save the drown boy.
Many soldiers are fighting as brave as lions.
(6) as brown as a berry :
Having been on the beach all day, his skin looked as brown as a berry.
Some American women love sunbathing; they become as brown as berries.
(7) as busy as a bee:
Don't bother Mr. B; he is always as busy as a bee.
Mr. A cannot see you right now; he is as busy as a bee.
The factory employees sometimes are as busy as bees.
(8) as changeable as the weather :
(keep changing one's mood or decision)
As far as his job is concerned, Mr. B is as changeable as the weather.
Try not to marry a person who is as changeable as the weather.
